This summer, the plan was that our helpers would get to eat lunch at Lonely Worm Farm. We would harvest vegetables from the field then make a communal meal in the fancy new wheelchair accessible kitchen in the fancy new Felix House. However, things got a little behind schedule, and the fancy new kitchen looks like this:
Apparently the gods were bent on this farm-to-table business anyway. They sent me Nicky Thomas, an old friend from D.C., who now lives in Berkeley and for years taught at Alice Waters’s Edible Schoolyard. And they sent me a quartet of young adult farm hands from Ramapo for Children. One of whom delighted us no end by skipping around the field, announcing, “I love nature!” Another objected to the bees, the goats, the chicken–even the peanut butter cookies—but came around when it came to making pizza.
After gathering herbs, lettuce and zucchini from the field, Nicky led us in slicing the zucchini, tearing up the herbs, stretching the pizza dough, grinding garlic with a mortar and pestle, and tossing a salad. Who needs a kitchen when you have an art barn with a newly bleached work table and a grill? The reviews were beyond five stars. It was the best pizza anyone had ever tasted.
In other news, last month I had a wonderful conversation with Aransas Savas who interviewed me for her podcast, The Uplifters. We talked about starting a nonprofit and writing and family and many other things besides… And today it is live! Much thanks to Aransas for including me in her truly uplifting project.

Beautiful. I love your inspiring quote that the podcaster put into the header, even though I haven't had a chance to listen yet: "If something needs to exist and doesn't, people will come into your life who will help you make it happen. It's the working together and the sharing of difficulties that gives you energy."
It was such a deep joy to talk to you, to hear your story, and to imagine what’s possible when we call others in to help us create community where we crave it.
